Why do we always see the same side of the Moon?

Exactly half of the families who played Quiz 53 knew the word for why the Moon always shows us the same face. That made it the joint hardest question of the week, tied with a sneaky picture puzzle.

The rest of the quiz went brilliantly. The average score was 12 out of 15, and players got 80% of all answers right.

Why do we always see the same side of the Moon?

The Moon is tidally locked. Earth's gravity slowed the Moon's spin over billions of years until it matched its orbit, so the same face points at us forever.

It spins exactly once for every trip it makes around us, which is why no matter where on Earth you stand, you see the same side. We gave four options and only 50% of players landed on the right one. Space ended up as the toughest category of the quiz.

If your crew went with "orbit synced" or "gravity bound", you were in good company. They sound very scientific!

What word does this picture represent?

Rebus snowman

The answer is snowman.

Picture puzzles like this one look simple until you stare at them, and this one split the room right down the middle. Just 50% of players cracked it. Have another look at the image now that you know. Does it click?

Who played the first NFL game in Australia at the MCG?

The Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers played the first NFL game in Australia, and the 49ers won 27 to 7.

It was played at the MCG in front of 100,000 people, and we only asked for one of the two teams. 73% of players named at least one.

Victorian families had a clear home ground advantage here. 93% of players in Victoria got it right, compared with 46% in Queensland.
