New Book Week Quiz!

What is the largest country in Africa?

Quiz 11 kicked off the new year with a geography answer that surprises almost everyone, plus an alphabet puzzle designed to short-circuit brains at breakfast.

What is the largest country in Africa?

Algeria, covering more than 2.38 million square kilometres. Most people guess somewhere further south, but since Sudan split in two, Algeria has held the crown comfortably.

A great reminder that the mental map most of us carry is decades out of date.

If there were no vowels, what would be the 10th letter of the alphabet?

M. Strip out A, E, I and O from the first stretch of the alphabet and count ten consonants: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L... M. Simple to describe, surprisingly fiddly to do in your head.

Which car maker has this badge?

Mazda car badge logo

Have a look at the badge above. It belongs to Mazda, whose winged M has been through a dozen redesigns since the company started out making cork products in Hiroshima a century ago.

That was Quiz 11: a mislabelled mental map, a missing-vowel workout and a badge from Hiroshima. New year, same tricks.
