Nine. All but 9 means 9 stayed. The riddle counts on you doing 17 minus 9 before you finish reading the sentence, and it works on almost everyone at least once.

How often do pandas poop?
About 40 times a day. A panda's digestive system is built for a carnivore but fed almost nothing except nutrient-poor bamboo, so the poor things process an enormous volume to get by.
