What does GIF stand for?

Only 28% of players cracked the Trios puzzle in Quiz 51, which made it the hardest question of the lot by a clear margin. The rest of the quiz was much kinder, with families averaging 11.3 out of 15 and getting 75% of questions right overall. Father's Day weekend gave us a menu that hid a code and a card with holes in it.

What does GIF stand for?

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. It was invented in 1987, which makes it older than the web itself.

We asked it with a bit of cheek, because one of the answers in the same quiz was a GIF. A card with holes cut in it slid across a list of Father's Day presents and spelled out SOCKS.

53% of players picked the right one from the four options. The other three were built to sound just as believable, and Graphics Interlaced Format is the one that catches people, because interlacing is a real thing images do. Interchange is the word to hang onto. A GIF was made for moving pictures between different computers, back when that was genuinely hard.

Who is Australia's head of state?

Australia's head of state is the King, Charles III. The Prime Minister runs the country, but laws are passed and Parliament is opened in the King's name.

Just 55% of players got it, and you can see why. The Prime Minister is the name everybody wants to say, because he is the one on the news every night. The Governor-General is the other tempting answer, and it is close, since that is the person who represents the King here in Australia. The King is still the head of state.

This is a good one to try on the adults at the dinner table. It is on the school curriculum, so there is a fair chance the kids will be the ones explaining it.

What will the kids charge Dad for toast?

Visual price code puzzle

Have a proper look at the menu above before you read on. The answer is $2.00. Every price is 10 cents times the position of that item's first letter in the alphabet.

Coffee starts with C, the 3rd letter, so 30c. Pancakes is P, the 16th, so $1.60. Bacon is B, the 2nd, so 20c. That leaves toast. T is the 20th letter, so Dad gets charged $2.00 for the simplest thing on the menu, which feels about right for breakfast in bed.

38% of players cracked it, putting it among the toughest questions of the week. The families who tried the alphabet early got there quickly. Anyone hunting for a vowel rule or a price per letter went round in circles, and that was the point.
