Just 26% of players could name a single layer of Earth's atmosphere, which left Science as the hardest category in Quiz 48 by a distance. Families still finished with a healthy average of 11.1 out of 15, and 74% of all answers came back correct. Here are the three questions that caused the most trouble.

How many players are in a rugby league team?
Thirteen. Rugby union puts 15 on the field, league drops it to 13, and those two missing forwards are the quickest way to tell the two codes apart from the couch.
Just over half the community got there, at 51%. It also split the country more than almost anything else in the quiz, with 38 points between the best state and the worst, which is roughly what you would expect from a game that is a religion in some postcodes and barely on the telly in others.
On which day was the pond exactly half covered?
Day 29. The lily pads double every single day, so the pond goes from half covered to completely covered in one last jump. Work backwards from day 30 and the answer is the day right before it, not day 15.
52% of players saw it. It is the kind of riddle that punishes you for reaching for the maths, because the whole thing turns on one step back from the end.

The four you were after are the troposphere, the mesosphere, the thermosphere and the exosphere. The troposphere is the one we live in, the thin bottom slice where all the weather happens. The exosphere sits right at the top, where the air quietly gives up and turns into space.
Only 26% of players named one, making it the hardest question in Quiz 48 and dragging Science down to the toughest category of the week. Worth a second look at the picture with the kids, because the order of the layers is one of those things that sticks once you have said it out loud.
